Original Tokyo Banana

Tokyo Banana Original

Tokyo Banana are a series of banana flavored sweets that are often considered to be the #1 souvenir of choice to be given out as gifts by friends who have recently visited Japan. Tokyo Banana basically are banana flavored custard cakes meticulously wrapped and packaged in Japanese standards.

Tokyo Banana Original
8 pieces per box

As mentioned, Tokyo Banana is a series of banana flavored snacks but there are actually quite a few variations. In this post I will mainly focus on the original Tokyo Banana.

Contents inside the box

Each cake is individually wrapped.

A closer look of a Tokyo Banana.

The soft and airy sponge cake makes for an excellent afternoon snack. The custard inside is very yummy, without being too sweet.

Other flavor: Caramel

We are opening Pre Order session of Tokyo Banana once in a week or two. Don’t worry about its freshness because it’ll come just a day after we bought it from Japan. ^^

You can also request for seasonal Leopard Tokyo Banana too.

Happy eating!

Sakura matcha flavor!

Sakura Matcha Kit Kats are generally only available during springtime in Japan. If you love cherry blossom, green tea and white chocolate, and you ever have access to these rare treats, you should definitely try them out! The aroma of Sakura Matcha Kit Kats is less matcha-heavy than the aroma of regular Matcha Kit Kat. The flavor is a robust balance of sugar (white chocolate and sakura sweetness), spice (white pepper and cinnamon) and green (oak leaves, matcha and fresh-cut spring flowers).

Dark chocolate flavor! (Otona)

The description on the back says that the exterior coating is “melt in your mouth chocolate” and between the wafers is croquant. Croquant is a French confection made up of carmelized sugar that does not include butter or cream. It is usually just water and sugar and one of its uses is to make a type of nut brittle (particularly with almonds). Each mini bar is individually wrapped, has 70 calories, and smells nicely of chocolate. The cocoa scent is definitely stronger than the chocolate on a normal KitKat. The flavor is also richer and deeper. It’s a little like a really strong hot chocolate, but with no bitter notes.

PS: Each bag consists of 12 individual wraps and each wrap has 2 bars. So 24 bars in total.

Another flavors you can choose from! (Limited edition)

Le Lectier Pear Kit Kat – Niigata Limited Edition

The Le Lectier Kit Kat is another example of how Japanese people like to randomly throw French phrases around. Le Lectier is a popular pear grown in Niigata making it a prime candidate for a regional limited edition. Le Lectier Kit Kat has 69 calories and is made with white chocolate. Upon opening it there was a strong artificial pear smell. This mini had a nice smooth pear flavor to it that was pretty tasty. It was concentrated in the chocolate but it was there in the wafers as well.

Yubari melon flavor!

This tiny gift set features 5 mini foil packages of Kit Kats, each with two small bars in them. The packaging also tells us that Yubari Melons are native to Hokkaido, and as such this is a regional snack. Up close you get that pleasant distinct milk chocolate Kit Kat scent, and a very sweet melon scent as well. The melon flavour is close to Cantaloupe, but if you’ve ever had any other Japanese melon-flavoured items, it’s much closer to those than to fresh cantaloupe.

Citrus golden blend flavor!

The bar smells like a mixture of lemon, orange, and white chocolate. The first burst of flavor is definitely a pretty nice juicy orange task followed by a very mellow lemon. These KitKats represent the regions of Chugoku and Shikoku, both of which grow citrus fruit.

Blueberry cheesecake flavor!

Well, Japan has always been delivering something exotic and foreign in candy form is a challenge that the Japanese will rise to every time, and that’s what brings me to Blueberry Cheescake Kit Kats. Much sweeter than the standard cheese Kit Kat, blueberry cheesecake has hints of artificial blueberry but that intense, distinctive cheese scent is pretty overpowering. Breaking the Kit Kat fingers in half and smelling the interior doesn’t do much either, it’s almost entirely the Kit Kat white chocolate cheese smell, with just a touch of blueberry sweetness.

Rilakkuma’s hot pancake flavor! (Very limited edition)

Rilakkuma Hotcake, which looks to be pancake-flavored Kit Kats inspired by the San-X character Rilakkuma has a surprisingly amazing taste. The outer shell tastes like butter, while the wafers give off a reasonably mild maple-syrup flavor. Taken together, they taste like pancakes that are just came out from the kitchen. Very well recommended for dessert lovers out there.

Wasabi flavor!

Wasabi, also known as the Japanese horseradish, is known for its strong, pungent flavour that, upon consumption, feels like Mount Fuji is erupting in your nose. However, this green-tinged-white-chocolate kit kat affords you endless wasabi pleasure, without the spicy eruptions.

Apple flavor!

Direct from Japan, this apple flavoured milk chocolate kit kat masterfully blends apple with chocolate such that no single flavour is overpowering. Biting into it reveals a nice crispness that reminds you of apples freshly plucked from their high perches. Newton himself would be proud to have this drop upon his esteemed crown.

Strawberry cheesecake flavor!

Yokohama, Japan, is known for their legendary strawberries, which is of little surprise why they would come up with this flavor. You’ll feel like freshly ripened strawberries are exploding in your mouth and then imagine tasting the best cheesecake you’ve ever had in your life. Rejoice.

Ichimi or chili pepper flavor!

Spice up your life with Chili Kit Kat! Chili and dark chocolate seem an unlikely pair, but you have to try it to find out otherwise. Dark chocolate is a surprise complement to chili, and each bite does not explode into a fiery eruption, but slowly builds a distinct yet pleasurable spicy buzz at the back of your throat.Image

PS: These flavors come in a box of 12 individually wrapped packets, with each packet containing 2 sticks of pure indulgence.

Flavors you can choose from! (New edition)

Black honey (Kuromitsu) flavor!

Kuromitsu is not brown sugar. It’s a type of syrup that is often used on warabi mochi and other Japanese sweets. This flavor pairs well with the white chocolate and wafer combo of a KitKat. As much as the name portrayed the taste was largely appeal to Mayple Syrup, and had a lovely slight burnt sugar taste to it. This paired with the creamy white chocolate made for a honey and sweet yogurt type experience which is extremely delightful to taste. I would really recommend this to everyone out there.

Hojicha flavor!

Hojicha is a popular roasted type of tea in Japan, it’s different to Matcha and other types of Japanese green teas, in the sense that Hojicha is roasted green tea leaves over charcoal on a very high temperature until the leaves turn reddish-brown. Once brewed, Hojicha has a reddish-brown colour, it’s less bitter than green tea due to the loss of catechin content during the roasting process. But it has a very pleasant taste and aroma, and Hojicha was the inspiration for this new limited edition and VERY RARE regional flavor of Kit Kat!

Annin Doufu flavor!

Inspired from a popular Chinese dessert called ‘Annin dofu’ in Japanese romaji, the dessert is called ‘Xingren dofu’ in Chinese and literally translates to ‘Almond tofu’, but often it is also called ‘almond jelly’ or ‘almond pudding’. The Annin dofu flavor in the white choco coating was just enough to shine through and cleanse your palate, it wasn’t too subtle, nor was it too over-powering, you can still taste the sweet white choco too.
And the wafers, well, they were lovely and crispy as usual, with more choc between the wafers. Very recommended!

Zunda flavor!

Zunda is mashed green soy beans (or cookededamame) and this particular cuisine is a specialty of the northern Tohoku area. In terms of flavor, this is a sweet white-chocolate-based bar. Overall, Kit Kat Zunda is slightly sweet, toothsome and satisfying.

Cinnamon cake flavor!

This kitkat has white chocolate coating infused with cinnamon sprinkles. The sweetness of the white chocolate mixed well with the cinnamon sprinkles inside. It’s not necessarily spicy, but it gave quite a spice in my experience. A surprising flavor since cinnamon is rarely used in Asian cooking. These kit kats had little crunchy bits embedded inside, like cinnamon crystals. These did taste mildly of cinnamon, the brown kind, not the spicy one. The crunch of the little crystals is really great!

Beni imo flavor!

Beni-Imo flavored Kit Kat, otherwise known as an Okinawa tradition; he Purple sweet potato. The subtle flavor of purple sweet potato is nicely infused into the milk chocolate. This is the Kyushu island regional specialty. It tastes pretty much exactly like the real thing, which is good news because “beni imo” is one of the tastier Japanese sweets available.

Strawberry flavor!

This sparkling strawberry Kit Kat crunchy wafer bar is coated in a rich and creamy strawberry flavored white chocolate, which offers up a perfectly balanced treat, with enough crunch and enough deliciously creamy chocolate to satisfy any Kit Kat lover. If you’re a fan of strawberries, chocolates and in desperate need of a break, we have just the thing for you with our newly arrived Strawberry KitKat.

Go on, have a break. You know you want to.

PS: These flavors come in a box of 12 individually wrapped packets, with each packet containing 2 sticks of pure indulgence.
